Harrison & Hetherington’s farmstock business dates back to 1870, originally operating a number of local livestock auction marts throughout North Cumbria and South West Scotland with, until 1974, its main facility being in Carlisle city centre.

In 1974 Harrison & Hetherington was one of the first auction companies in the UK to relocate to an edge of town site, namely Borderway J43 of the M6 motorway.

Borderway is one of the largest and leading livestock sale centres in the UK, handling some 800,000 head of cattle and sheep annually and providing a service to sellers and buyers from all geographic locations, including Europe. This site has a capacity to hold sales of commercial livestock of up to 3,500 head of cattle or 17,000 head of sheep on any one day. Annually, 120,000 cattle and 680,000 sheep are sold by auction and/or by private treaty.

Aside from Borderway the company operates seven other auction marts: Kirkby Stephen, Lazonby and Broughton in Furness in Cumbria; Middleton-in-Teesdale and St John’s Chapel in County Durham; Lockerbie and Newcastleton in Dumfries and Galloway and Roxburghshire respectively; specialist livestock sales are also conducted at various other sites throughout the UK.

Harrison & Hetherington are the official appointed auctioneers for all major beef, dairy and sheep breed societies and clubs throughout the UK.

The farmstock business is well known to and respected by, pedigree and commercial farmers nationwide and in specialist fields worldwide. It is essential to blend the result of many years of dedication and expertise from the company together with unstinting support from the farming community which provides a rock solid foundation from which we are addressing the challenges ahead. Of these challenges the UK’s re-introduction into the European and International market place is one of the most exciting and an avenue which the company has been pursuing for some considerable time.

The building blocks of the service we can provide to international buyers and sellers are already in place and the active interest shown by progressive continental and home breeders has come to fruition in seeing animals purchased through Harrison & Hetherington sale rings being exported to Europe - Belgium, Spain, Italy, France and Southern Ireland.
